Building with biodiversity in mind

Only 11% of the surface area of our Resorts is represented by the buildings, the rest is all landscaped grounds and gardens or pure nature. Local plants are selected in the aim of preserving endemic species. The design and building of our Resorts always aims to protect the natural environment and prevent erosion. A recent example: during the renovation of the Cancun Resort, the Club devised a procedure to prevent the coral reef from getting sanded up in the event of future hurricanes.

Integrated management of grounds and gardens

Among the numerous clauses in the Club's "grounds and gardens" charter is the choice of appropriate plant species (local, non-invasive, re-introduction of endemic species, etc), avoidance of chemical pesticides (for example, in Greece the Club asked INRA to devise a treatment using essential oils against cochineal bugs that attack pine trees), replacement of chemical fertilisers by organic systems and of herbicides by thermal treatment or manual weeding, the reduction of plant waste by grinding and recycling, mulching, etc. In 2010, 70% of the villages have definitly excluded chemical fertilizers and chemical pesticides for the outside.

Eco-friendly purchasing policy

The Club's Responsible Purchasing policy includes the protection of biodiversity, with measures to protect threratened resources and species and to encourage organic agriculture. Such measures concern wood, paper, fish, organic food produce, etc. in particular with the "Wood purchasing Policy" or the "Fish purshasing Policy". Eco-responsible products

Awareness of beauty leads to awareness of the environment

When it comes to protecting biodiversity and natural resources, the evolution of behaviour patterns is a major issue.
Club Med is in an excellent position to encourage its staff and customers to help protect the ecosystems around them, as the exceptional natural environments in which the Resorts are located provide a fabulous incentive to protect the planet. The Club is acutely aware of this privileged situation and does its utmost to use it to the advantage of the environment.

Taking part in projects to preserve biodiversity

Club Med is the partner of the Expédition Med, an international group of scientists. They’ll sail in the Mediterranean Sea from 2010 to 2013 to study the quantity and toxicity of the tons of plastic waste that are desegregating in the sea. During the summer 2010, in the villages in Cargese and Sant’Ambroggio, the team of the expedition lead a workshop to raise the awareness of the children on the issue and show them their scientific materials.

Helping to spread agro-ecologic practices

Club Med supports Agrisud in its initiative to create a guide of best practices in agro-ecology to communicate their know-how in an educational and easy way. It describes the core principles of agro-ecology and details these pratices. The guide is intended for field practitioners (NGOs, project players from the North and the South) in order to improve their know-how and to allow them to achieve economic and social autonomy more easily.
