Club Med has always used the features of local architecture to ensure its Resorts blend in with the environment, and the use of local materials means they're well suited to the local climate. Since 2006 it has implemented a Sustainable Building policy (criteria specific to the tourist industry) for all new projects, using green guidelines for all constructions in both cold (mountain) and warm climates.
The Club's Sustainable Development Division has implemented a reporting system called Tech Care, developed with Invalua using a specific environmental reporting tool (Indicia). Since 2007 this tool has enabled the Club's technical teams to analyse a Resort's consumption reliably and easily, correct unsustainable trends and optimise performance. That means a total of 1,000 metres monitoring consumption of water and energy, often on a daily basis. The Sustainable Development Division has created a new post to manage this monitoring equipment, which it sees as a key element of its environmental policy.
Club Med has undertaken the eco-certification of most villages by independent third-party organizations to guarantee its environmental good practices and to ensure its sustainability initiatives are implemented in its long-term priorities. Club Med is the only tourism operator which has experienced the three most recognized and demanding certification programs in the tourism industry: European Ecolabel for tourist accommodations (EE), Earth Check (EC) and Green Globe Certification (GGC).
More than 10% of our villages are already certified or committed in the certification process. Already certified : Opio-en- Provence since 2008 , Ixtapa Pacific since 2009 , and Cherating Beach, Chamonix Mont-Blanc, Turquoise, Cancun Yucatan, Columbus Isle, and Punta Cana since 2010,. Other villages have undertaken initiatives which aim to reduce CO2 emissions, save energy, improve waste management; protect biodiversity, preserve water resources, contribute to local development and respect local communities.
