A visit to the Bintan elephant park is a great opportunity to see these wonderful animals close up. The Seven Elephants of Sumatra is a fabulous interactive show (40 minutes) in which you'll see the elephants feeding, with lots of fascinating information about what they eat and their characteristics and behaviour. After the show you can enjoy a ride on one of these magnificent creatures (optional) or simply help to feed them.
Guided tour to learn about traditional fishing techniques with a local fisherman.
Your excursion will take you to a traditional local village where you can help fish for crabs, shrimps and other fish, with a local fisherman. He'll explain the different types of trap used to catch the fish.
Trip down the River Sebung: you'll admire the incredible life in the mangrove as the river winds through the jungle.
Can be done as a daytime or evening excursion:
By day, you can observe the plant and animal life (monkies, snakes, lizards, kingfishers, etc) and enjoy the serenity of the forest.
In the evening, the twinkling stars will add to the magic of this river trip, and you'll see myriads of fireflies floating through the mangrove.
You can go fishing with a local fisherman and catch crabs and shrimps.
You may lunch or dine in one of the best local seafood restaurants (optional extra).
Guided tour of a traditional Indonesian village.
You'll drive through the Indonesian jungle before boarding a boat that will take you down the river to the village of Kampung, where you'll learn about local life and traditions. You'll learn to make the medicinal herb, Jamu (a traditional Indonesian medecine) and Tempeh (fermented soya). You'll also learn about traditional weaving techniques. On the way back, you'll stop off at Pasar Oleh Oleh, to admire local crafts such as Batik.
To explore Bintan Island, you can take a taxi to Pasar Oleh Oleh and visit the village at your leisure.
It has a little souvenir market and a group of traditional wooden huts that propose delicious Indonesian specialities: Keropok (shrimp and fish crackers), dried sea food, scallops and small fresh shrimps.
For those with a sweet tooth, the Kueh Lapis is a tasty local cake.
Close to the Straits of Malacca,
Guided tour of the second largest town on Bintan Island. You'll visit a local farm where you can taste over twenty different kinds of fruit and vegetables, before visiting the traditional Chinese temple. At Tanjung Uban you'll have time to visit the local market and buy some local produce. On the way back, you'll stop at Panorama Hill for some fresh coconut, before stopping off at Pasar Oleh Oleh to admire local crafts such as Batik.
