The origins of the town are lost in legend. According to one tradition, it was founded by the queen of the Amazons, Ephos.
The third-largest port of the ancient world after Rome and Alexandria, Ephesus was a cosmopolitan city where all kinds of beliefs came together. You can admire this ancient city, which was gradually silted up and is now almost 7 kms (4 miles) from the Aegean coast. The temple dedicated to the goddess Artemis was one of the seven wonders of the world, and the many marble monuments that embellish this Ionian city take you back through time. 9 kms to the east, perched on the hills, Sirince stands out with its beautiful stone houses. You'll lunch in this typical village amid vineyards and orchards, and then have time to stroll through its narrow streets. In the afternoon you'll visit the magnificent Isa Bey Mosque built in 1375, and round off this unforgettable day with a stop for shopping.
